Modernism, which pursued rationality and functionality, forms the foundation of contemporary architecture and design, but in the 1960s and 70s, it faced criticism for becoming too homogenized.

It was in this context that postmodernism emerged in the 1980s as a value system that transcended modernism. This design movement, characterized by its sculptural forms and pop color schemes, was spearheaded by the Milan-based design collective Memphis.

This summer, the first major retrospective of Ettore Sottsass, the leader of Memphis, is being held in Japan. Furthermore, reproductions of spaces and furniture created by Japanese designers, from Shiro Kuramata and Masanori Umeda to Shigeru Uchida and Akio Ohashi, who were part of Memphis, are rapidly progressing. The number of people incorporating postmodern products into their interiors is also increasing.
