Dakota Johnson’s New World

In the years since “The Social Network” and the “Fifty Shades of Grey” trilogy made Dakota Johnson a star, she’s developed a certain reputation. Her career has spanned big studio movies (“How to Be Single,” “Madame Web”) and celebrated indies (“The Lost Daughter,” “Materialists”), yet Johnson may be more beloved for playing herself—dryly funny, a little mischievous—than for just about any of her onscreen characters.

This October, she appears opposite Anne Hathaway and Josh Hartnett in “Verity,” an adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s blockbuster page-turner, followed by Alice Rohrwacher’s “Three Incestuous Sisters” with Jessie Buckley, Saoirse Ronan, and Josh O’Connor some time next year. But she’s also been thinking about the bigger picture lately. “I’ve worked back-to-back for so long that now I have this deep calling to shift my perspective a bit,” Johnson says, “and maybe have a bit more of a real life.”

For Vogue’s October 2026 issue—and ahead of Vogue World: Milan, which she will attend—Dakota Johnson meets Alessandra Codinha at home in Los Angeles to talk movies, musicians, motherhood, and her problem with being considered “cool.”
